Ongoing Projects

The section participates in multiple projects, some of which are described below:

BIOWATER

  • An Integrating Nexus of Land and Water Management for a Sustainable Nordic Bioeconomy (BIOWATER) BIOWATER will serve as the first Nordic science center and platform that provides solutions for land, environmental and water resources management in the face of potential and competing demands for biomass, land and water resources related to the green shift and concurrent bio-economic development. BIOWATER started in December 2016 and will continue for 5 years.

Controlled Drainage

  • The project was completed in spring 2015.

MONITECH

  • Development and tests of new cost-efficient monitoring technologies and design for planning of restoration of catchment areas.

BUFFERTECH

  • Optimisation of ecosystem services from buffer zones using new technologies.

DNMARK 

  • Development of sustainable solution ideas for the challenge of nitrogen faced by Danish society.

VOLTRES

  • Improving our understanding of the physical and biogeochemical functioning of Lake Volta and how the lake and its resources (fish) will respond to climate change.

DCE project

  • Sources, quality, turnover, transport and effects of dissolved organic matter and dissolved organic nutrients from soil to fjords.

Output-based area and nitrogen regulation of agriculture

  • Investigation and development of new and more intelligent methods for quantifying the nitrogen output from the so-called ID15 catchments (Denmark is divided into catchments with an average size of 15 km2). The main focus of the section is directed at monitoring methods in streams. Another focus is to investigate whether the differences in runoff and nitrogen retention depend on hydrological, geological and soil conditions are measurable in the streams.

Go4Baltic

  • The Baltic Sea project Go4Baltic is funded by BONUS, i.e. partly by EU funds and partly by national funds. The project examines relationships, synergies and conflicts between national and international environmental and agricultural policies across the Baltic Sea countries. The aim is to provide policy-relevant advice and recommendations to reduce the eutrophication of the Baltic Sea in the context of climate and agricultural policy. One of the contributions of the section is to predict environmental effects using models linking agriculture, nutrient transport and ecological effects in the marine environment.

National Nitrogen model

  • GEUS and Aarhus University (DCE and DCA) have developed a national nitrogen model under the project ”Oplandsmodel til belastning og virkemidler” (~ ‘Catchment model for nitrogen loading and tools) initiated by the Nature Agency, the Danish AgriFish Agency and the Danish Environmental Protection Agency. The model describes the total nitrogen transport and turnover from field to coast by coupling the sub-models developed specifically for, respectively, the root zone, groundwater and surface water at the three institutions. The project was completed in autumn 2015.
