Biological structure is temperature dependent and influences the water quality of lakes and vice versa. We explore the underlying mechanisms of, for instance, the effects of temperature on biology and, with this, on the water quality of lakes. For that purpose experimental research set-ups are established and space-for-time analyses conducted where comparable systems along a latitude gradient are investigated.

The results are used for the further development of lake models simulating future climate scenarios in our lakes (CRES). In a new EU project (MARS – website underway) the combination of stressors is investigated – such as the effects of a heat wave combined with high nutrient input on a lake system, and the AU-Ideas project CIRCE explores how ecosystem functions, including diversity, are influenced.
