The section is an important player in the Freshwater Topic Centre and is responsible for the annual data analysis and compilation of monitoring data on Danish lakes (NOVANA). In the interpretation of monitoring data, research-based knowledge is used; conversely, the monitoring data can be used particularly in climate research where time series are essential to obtain credible results. The data is also used for a knowledge-based development of threshold values in relation to the Water Framework and Habitats Directive. Relative to managing, research is conducted into the development and implementation of new techniques, such as application of satellites in monitoring.
