Carbon Sequestration

Tree planting and carbon sequestration

A carbon forest project has being established in Senegal and certified for CO2 sale at the voluntary carbon market. As part of the EU-funded Undesert project researchers work with local communities and district authorities to establish tree planting employing a mix of new planting and natural regeneration techniques and to provide women’s groups with access to land ownership.

Carbon certification is based on estimates of biomass and carbon stocks and researchers work to calculate allometric models for several native tree species. A careful selection of the best native tree species for planting is crucial, as the species selection will determine the value of the carbon forest and the resistance to climate change. The species selection is based on local knowledge assessed by quantitative ethnobotanical methods.
