Desertification and degradation processes

Desertification and degradation processes

Interdisciplinary research is conducted to increase the understanding of desertification and land degradation processes and their impacts on ecosystems and local communities in West Africa. The West African region is a key to understanding the processes driving severe and widespread desertification and land degradation resulting from climate change and human activities. Work carried out under the EU-funded Undesert project, combine vegetation, soil and socioeconomic information with remote sensing and modelling in order to develop decision support tools and best practice guidelines for natural resource managers. The scientific results have relevance for food security, biodiversity and poverty reduction and provide a basis for responding to desertification and degradation through improved management practices and tree planting
