Tenure-track Assistant Professor in Microbial Ecophysiology and Bioinformatics 968692

The Department of Bioscience, Aarhus University, invites applications for a position as Tenure-track Assistant Professor in Microbial Ecophysiology and Bioinformatics. The position is available from Oct 1, 2018, or as soon as possible thereafter, subject to negotiation.

The Department of Bioscience
The Department of Bioscience belongs to the Faculty of Science & Technology at Aarhus University. The Department currently employs approximately 140 full time scientific staff, 120 postdocs and PhD students and 120 technical support staff who together contribute to an international research environment.  The research fields ranges most aspects of biology, spanning all biological levels from genes, physiological processes, individuals, populations and species to entire ecosystems. The selected candidate will join the Center for Electromicrobiology (CEM), a Danish National Research Foundation Center of Excellence (see The overarching research questions in CEM are how cable bacteria conduct electrons, how they handle metabolism based on widely separated oxidation and reduction processes and how they interact with other microorganisms and the environment. The Center is hosted at the Department of Bioscience as an independent unit on the main Aarhus University campus and shares the state-of-the-art laboratories, facilities and instruments with the Section for Microbiology, an internationally leading research group in microbial ecology and biogeochemistry where English is the preferred language (see The Center is also tapping into expertise and analytical facilites at the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics and the iNANO Center, Aarhus University, all within walking distance.

Description of the position
We are looking for an early career researcher with a strong scientific track record in microbiology research preferentially covering microbial ecophysiology and bioinformatics of both uncultured and cultured prokaryotes.  We expect experience with experimental microbial physiology and with microbial (meta)genomics and/or (meta)transcriptomics techniques to link omics data with cell metabolism, microbial interactions and processes in natural environments. We expect the candidate in the application to present a work plan and research strategy for high-impact research within the field of electromicrobiology.

We further emphasize clarity in thinking and writing, and experience with oral and written dissemination of scientific knowledge to peers and the general public, and success in internationally competitive funding. Documented capacity for team collaboration and potential for research leadership are considered an important asset.

Participation in and development of public outreach and/or community engagement programs, and performance of departmental and university service is an expected and integral part of positions within our department.

 Complete postgraduate teacher training for Assistant Professors at Aarhus University
 Establish synergies between your own research and other related research activities

The following professional and personal qualifications are required:
 PhD degree or equivalent qualifications
 Documented high-level research qualifications
 Experience in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and supervision
 Experience in communication of research in a wide context
 Ability to strengthen national and international collaboration within the research area
 Proficiency in English.

Science and Technology Tenure Track

Highly qualified candidates are appointed as Assistant Professors for a period of six years with the prospect of performance-based advancement to a tenured Associate Professorship position.

As part of the Aarhus University Tenure Track Programme, the University carries out a mid-way evaluation to review the progress of the tenure track candidate after three years, according to the same criteria used in the final tenure review. The final tenure review is conducted after five and a half years. If the review is positive, the candidate will be offered a tenured position as Associate Professor at Aarhus University.

Application procedure
Shortlisting is used. This means that after the deadline for applications and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the assessment committee if necessary, the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. The selection is made on the basis of an assessment of who of the candidates are most relevant considering the requirements of the advertisement. All applicants will be notified within 6 weeks whether or not their applications have been sent to an expert assessment committee for evaluation. The selected applicants will be informed about the composition of the committee and will receive his/her assessment. Once the recruitment process is completed a final letter of rejection is sent to the deselected applicants, including the main considerations emphasized during the selection process.

Formalities and salary range
Science and Technology refers to the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Danish Universities under the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.

The application must be in English and include a curriculum vitae, degree certificate, a complete list of publications, a statement of future research plans and information about research activities, teaching portfolio and verified information on previous teaching experience (if any). Appointment shall be in accordance with the collective labour agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. Salary depends on seniority as agreed between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Confederation of Professional Associations.
