About AURORA

Aarhus University’s research vessel AURORA is a multifunctional research vessel with emphasis on flexibility in the accommodation, equipment and assignments.

Regarding the vessel’s design, an intensive work has been made to reduce the noise in both the vessel and the water. The propellers, made in the Danish town Hundested, are particularly designed for seismic assignments - and for the new vessel. All engines and gears are placed on rubber feet with noise and vibration-reducing properties, and the gears have been chosen due to the low noise profile. The accommodation space is designed with particularly noise-reducing panels and lining in all rooms with a view to keeping the sound level under what is recommended by The Danish Maritime Authority.

With the purpose of increasing the comfort, the vessel is equipped with an anti-rolling tank and a bulbous bow.

The afterdeck has a total area of 75 m2 and is extending into a wetlab (25 m2) through a sliding door without coaming height. The afterdeck and the wetlab are covered by a bolt grid of 0,5*0,5 metre. In this grid, equipment such as winches, cranes and containers can be fastened, thus optimising the position for the individual assignment. The users have the opportunity to bring and install their own equipment.

The drylab is 16 m2 and contains a fume cupboard, among other things. In addition, AU has an isotope-certified laboratory container which can increase the laboratory capacity if required.

The mess (30 m2) is the main accommodation room and from time to time it also functions as a teaching room with smartboard.

In the wheelhouse, there is a survey area from which e.g. CTD, ROV and seismic operations can be handled.  From here there is a good contact with the navigator and a view to the crew on the deck. On the roof of the wheelhouse, eight metres above the waterline, a separate observation place is screened with online access to navigation data and the vessel’s internet.

History

The vessel has been planned since 2007, but the specific ideas and design were not really gaining momentum until 2009, as the money for the project was found. The vessel was officially named and taken into action on 25 April 2014.
