Mikkel Schierup: Evolutionary genomics of the great apes

14.01.2014 Seminar, Zoophysiology 13.15 - 14.00, building 1131, room 127.

Foredragsholder: Mikkel Schierup.

Full genome sequences are now almost trivial to get from many individuals of closely related species. Through analyses of these sequences we can infer the action of natural selection and decipher the speciation processes. I will review what we have learned about speciation and natural selection in the great apes, i.e. humans, chimpanzees, bonobos, gorillas and orangutans. Speciation has often, but not always, been a gradual process of populations slowly drifting apart until gene flow finally ceases. Adaptive evolution is generally rare, except on the X chromosome, which is repeatedly targeted by very strong selection. I will discuss why we think this is so.
