ABSTRACT:

Through symbiotic associations with plant-biomass degrading fungi and complex gut bacterial communities, fungus-farming termites have become dominant decomposers in the Old World. Here, I review our current understanding of how this complex symbiosis accomplishes near-complete degradation of plant substrate and how the association remarkably manages to avoid specialized diseases of their monoculture fungus crop.
